In late June 1829, Joseph Smith completed the translation of the Book of Mormon here. In nearby woods, the Three Witnesses saw the angel Moroni and the gold plates. On 6 April 1830, about 60 people assembled at the Peter Whitmer home to witness the formal organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
