Severn End is the magnificent estate of Joseph Smith’s ancestors. It is located in Worcestershire, England along the river Severn where it remains standing today. Joseph’s fifth great-grandmother, Mary Scudamore, whose mother was a Lechmere, was led “out of captivity” in her journey to Boston in 1630 on the Winthrop Fleet. Mary married Thomas French; their daughter, Mary French, was born in 1634 in Boston and in 1656 married Robert Smith, the first of the Joseph’s Smith ancestors to come to America.
