Jonathan Browning Home

This image depicts the home of gun maker Jonathan Browning in Nauvoo, Illinois. Before joining the Church in 1840, Browning was an established gunsmith and justice of the peace in Quincy, Illinois. He was quickly ostracized by the people of Quincy following his conversion, but was able to move to Nauvoo and establish a successful gun shop there. Each gun he sold in Nauvoo came with an engraved plate on the stock, reading “Holiness to the Lord – Our Preservation.”
