Al Rounds

Watercolors

All of Al’s original paintings are done in watercolor on 140 lb. cold-pressed d’Arches paper primarily with Windsor Newton paints. Al is a transparent watercolorist, which means he does not use white paint. Any white you see in his paintings is the white of the paper. In other words, Al decides what not to paint as often as he decides what to paint.

Being a transparent watercolorist is more challenging because it doesn’t allow the artist to paint over mistakes. Once the painting is drawn out and in progress, the watercolorist cannot make changes or move things around. The challenge for the artist is being able to see the painting finished in his mind before he starts and stay focused on it.
